Wolff reportedly set to resign as Mercedes team boss!

Reports are swirling in the German media today alleging that Toto Wolff will soon relinquish his role at the helm of the Mercedes F1 team although he would retain his ownership in the outfit. Auto Bild and F1 Insider are claiming that the future of Mercedes in Formula 1 beyond the 2020 season is currently being debated behind closed doors at Daimler. The reports suggest that Wolff will resign as the Brackley squad’s team boss before the 2020 gets underway in Austria in July but the stories offer no insight into the identity of his potential successor. Wolff baffled by level of ‘manipulation and opportunism’ in F1 Wolff holds a…

Balanced Audio Technology VK-56SE power amplifier

I had never been alone with a Russian-manufactured 6C33C tube. At least not at night, in the dark. The first night Balanced Audio Technology’s VK-56SE tubed amplifier was in my system, I sat on the floor studying the unusual shape and dark orange glow of its four 6C33C-B output tubes. I noticed their brightly lit, cathedral-like innards. My Russian neighbor told me they were used as regulator tubes in MiG jets during the Cold War. I could believe it—their exposed cathodes were the exact color of the Soviet flag. From more than a foot away, I could feel the heat from their high-amperage filaments. The next morning, I pulled a…

    Ohm Acoustics F loudspeaker

We have still not received a pair of these for formal testing, which may be a good thing in view of our feelings these days about “updatings.” (Our feelings about such are clarified in this issue’s “As We See It.”) We auditioned Ohm Fs in three audio stores, and came away with five reactions. In one store, the two speakers we heard sounded similar to one another, but not terribly impressive. Stereo imaging was extraordinarily good, which has been the case with every truly omnidirectional speaker system we have heard, but the middle range of the Ohm Fs was rather markedly colored, with a vowel-like “eh” quality, and the low…

Dancing on the Edge: Keith Jarrett on Music & Art

Years before I moved to Santa Fe, where I eventually became Stereophile‘s copyeditor, assistant editor, and first music editor, I lived in Boston, Massachusetts. There, I’d spent a year as the in-house typesetter, copyeditor, and book-review editor of East West Journal, an eclectic monthly magazine devoted to nutrition, spirituality, cooking, gardening, conservation, and other subjects. Two years after I’d left EWJ, managing editor Meg Seaker called to ask if I wanted to interview Keith Jarrett for the magazine. On March 20, 1981, Meg and I and EWJ‘s art director, Merridee Shaw, met with Jarrett in his suite at the Ritz, on the eve of his Bach’s Birthday Concert at the…

Listening #205: John Fahey, Naim NAC 32-5, Naim NAP 250

During my first attempt at college, I lived in a dormitory where my next- door neighbors had an informal trade in pharmaceuticals; their most ardent customers were my neighbors across the hall. One of the latter was a fellow named Pete, a good-natured guy (if a bit sanctimonious in his disdain for music he considered insufficiently bluesy) whose heavy rotation list was, at the time, topped by John Fahey’s The Voice of the Turtle. I merely disliked the record the first time I heard it, but in the days ahead I came to loathe it. I found it repetitive, masturbatory, technically inept, and dead boring. Pete hated my music, too.…
