Italy has emerged as a weak link as the West gears up to launch military action against Syria in retaliation for chemical attacks on civilians. Paolo Gentiloni, who is caretaker prime minister after last month’s inconclusive general election, on Thursday said Italy would not participate in any bombing campaign against Syria. It would only offer “logistical support” to allies like Britain. "Italy will not participate in Syrian military actions," Mr Gentiloni said in a statement. "Based on current international and bilateral accords, Italy will continue to offer logistical support to allied forces." Alex Zanardi was transferred back to an intensive care unit in Milan on Friday following a worsening of the Italian driver’s condition. Last week, Zanardi was moved from the Santa Maria alle Scotta hospital in Siena, where the 53-year-old was being treated for severe head injuries sustained last month in a handbike accident, to a specialized rehabilitation center in the province of Lecco.
