Skeleton of child trying to shelter from Vesuvius eruption uncovered in Pompeii
Archeologists in Pompeii have discovered the skeleton of a child who tried in vain to hide from the cataclysmic eruption of Mt Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago. It is the first time in about 50 years that a child’s skeleton has been found in the remains of the ancient Roman city, which lies just south of Naples and was destroyed in AD79. The child, believed to be seven or eight years old, apparently took refuge in a public baths complex after the volcano erupted and started spewing ash and pumice into the air. But the building could not save the terrified youngster from the effects of the eruption, which was…

A controversial ship-borne nuclear power plant was launched from St Petersburg as part of a Russian plan to power remote seaside settlements. The Akademik Lomonosov, which green groups have dubbed "a floating Chernobyl," was towed from the shipyard where it was built in the Gulf of Finland on Saturday. It will be towed through the Baltic Sea and around the coast of Norway to Russia’s Arctic port of Murmansk, where it will be loaded with nuclear fuel for sea tests. Formula 1 won’t be racing on the North and South American continents this year, with the sport’s rounds scheduled in Austin, Mexico City and Sao Paulo wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. Liberty Media was hoping to salvage perhaps the US and Mexican races, scheduled respectively on October 23 and 30, but the continued rise of coronavirus cases in the two countries has forced F1 to cancel the events while Brazil’s challenging sanitary situation has dealt the final blow to Interlagos. Spanish GP ‘will go ahead’, Nurburgring return mooted The possibility of F1 racing in late October in Montreal was contemplated, but despite Canada reining in the pandemic, local restrictions…

An international coalition called on fashion and garment giants Thursday to break supply chains from the Xinjiang region of China and cut ties with those implicated in Uighur forced labor within the next year. The Coalition to End Forced Labour in the Uyghur Region, an international group of rights, civil society and trade organizations, warned that one-fifth of the cotton garments “in the global apparel market are tainted by forced labour.” “We are calling on leading brands and retailers to ensure that they are not supporting or benefiting from the pervasive and extensive forced labour of the Uyghur population and other Turkic and Muslim-majority peoples, perpetrated by the Chinese government,”…

More on Seating Dynamics For WWE’s Greatest Royal Rumble Event
In a follow-up to a previously reported news item about the seating complications at the upcoming Greatest Royal Rumble Event in Saudi Arabia, the stadium, while having a capacity of 62,000, will be set up for approximately only 52,000 to account for the stage. All the top seats are reserved for families because that is the look that the Saudi government wants and so the only way to get good seats is to be with a family that has to include at least one woman. Single men, either on their own or in groups, are forced to sit far away and were only allocated approximately 10,000 seats, all of which…
