Trump hits Venezuelan gold sector with sanctions as he attacks Latin American ‘troika of tyranny’

Venezuela and Cuba were hit with further sanctions by the United States on Thursday, as Donald Trump’s hawkish national security adviser unveiled a new policy on countries he termed, with Nicaragua, as "the troika of tyranny". Speaking at the Freedom Tower in Miami, at the heart of the city’s Cuban-American and Venezuelan dissident communities, John Bolton said the policy showed the US "will no longer appease dictators and despots near our shores in this hemisphere." Venezuela will, under the new policy, be unable to sell its gold. Much of the country’s reserves have been shipped to Turkey in the last year, with over $870 million exported. Mr Trump reportedly asked…

Passenger carrying grenade-shaped belt buckle on Barcelona-Madrid train triggers bomb scare evacuations

A woman carrying a grenade-shaped belt buckle on a train from Barcelona to Madrid caused havoc on Wednesday, forcing railway stations to be evacuated as well as delays. Police in Barcelona said they were advised by security personnel in the city’s main Sants station that "they had seen by scan an object that could be an explosive artefact," a spokesman told AFP. A photo of the luggage scan posted on the Twitter feed of Catalonia’s Mossos police force showed what looked clearly like a grenade. Most Spanish stations require passengers boarding trains to put their luggage through scanners. Police subsequently evacuated two high-speed trains at the Barcelona station but didn’t find anything, the spokesman said. "Then…

‘Mini-Merkel’ calls for Syrian migrants to be returned home as CDU leadership rivals jostle for position

One of the frontrunners to succeed Angela Merkel as leader of her political party has called for Germany to deport migrants to Syria. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said asylum-seekers whose claims are rejected or who commit crimes could be returned to the war-torn country. “Certain regions of Syria could be secure enough in the foreseeable future,” she told Bild newspaper.  Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer, popularly known in Germany as “mini-Merkel”, is widely seen as Mrs Merkel’s preferred successor. But she has been at pains to distance herself from the chancellor’s controversial migrant policy in her bid for the leadership of the Christian Democrat party (CDU). Germany currently bans deportations to Syria because of the situation…

    Huwe eyeing school history

There was nothing fun about the Minnesota Class 2A state wrestling tournament for James Huwe last season. With the weight of attempting to do something that had never been done in Detroit Lakes High School history on his broad shoulders, the state meet was business. “You’re supposed to get down here and you’re supposed to wrestle for fun, but when you’re trying to do something I’m trying to do, there’s a whole lot of pressure on you,” Huwe said at the meet last season. “You have to stay composed and do what you need to do. I’m out here not just because I like it. I love this sport.” Continue…

Apple Valley’s Hall Goes For 6th State Wrestling Title

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — If Mark Hall was in basketball instead of wrestling, he’d be as big as LeBron. And when the state wrestling tournament begins on Thursday, for the senior 170-pounder from Apple Valley, it’s a whole lot bigger than a chance at a state title.
