Venezuela opposition leader to ‘test’ regime with shipment of aid from neighbouring countries

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido said he will defy a government ban on humanitarian aid by sending large convoys of medicine into the country with the help of neighboring nations. In an interview Thursday, Guaido told The Associated Press the move will be a "new test" for Venezuela’s military, whose top brass has sided with President Nicolas Maduro since protests against his rule broke out. Guaido explained that aid for Venezuela will include life-saving medicines that are scarce in Venezuela and will be transported by vehicles arriving at several border points, after it is shipped into "friendly ports" in neighboring countries. "We are not just taking aid from the United…

France says relations with Italy ‘lowest since Second World War’ as Paris recalls ambassador to Rome

France has recalled its ambassador to Italy saying relations with Rome were at their lowest point "since the end of the Second World War” after Italy’s deputy prime minister met with "yellow vest" protesters. "For several months France has been the subject of repeated accusations, unfounded attacks and outlandish claims," the foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that its ambassador had returned home for “consultations”. This was by far the most caustic flare-up between Paris and Rome since Italy’s anti-establishment Five Star Movement and far-right League party came to power in a coalition government in June. The Italian coalition partners had been baiting the Macron administration for months following his…

Israeli snipers targeted children, health workers and journalists in Gaza protests, UN says

A UN probe on Thursday said there is evidence Israel committed crimes against humanity in responding to last year’s protests in Gaza, as snipers targeted people clearly identifiable as children, health workers and journalists. Israel immediately rejected the findings as "hostile, deceitful and biased." The UN Independent Commission of Inquiry on the protests in the Occupied Palestinian Territory investigated violations committed during demonstrations in the Gaza strip between March 30 and December 31 of 2018. "Israeli soldiers committed violations of international human rights and humanitarian law," committee chair Santiago Canton said in a statement. "Some of those violations may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity," he added. The commission, set up by…

Belgium’s smallest community makes a push for Schengen 2.0

Click:HP2202 Press play to listen to this article Voiced by Amazon Polly A small corner of Belgium is trying to keep Europe’s borders open. Many European countries, including Belgium, shuttered their frontiers this spring in a bid to stop the coronavirus from spilling onto their territories when it arrived on the Continent — an approach the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) later said was ineffective. Now petitioners from Ostbelgien — a small German-speaking area that Germany ceded after World War I — want the EU to rethink its Schengen open border rules to make sure another health emergency doesn’t spark a new wave of frontier restrictions. “My…
