US threatens to pull out troops stationed in Germany in row over defence spending

The US has threatened to withdraw thousands of troops stationed in Germany amid a dispute with Angela Merkel’s government over defence spending. Richard Grenell, the US ambassador in Berlin, warned that his country could pull out some of its forces if Germany continues to fall short of the alliance’s spending target of 2 per cent of GDP. “It is actually offensive to assume that the US taxpayer must continue to pay to have 50,000-plus Americans in Germany, but the Germans get to spend their surplus on domestic programs,” Mr Grenell told Germany’s DPA news agency. The remarks will add to concerns that the Nato alliance is becoming strained by President…

Kremlin dismisses doctors’ complaints they were exposed to radiation after blast

Doctors who treated the victims of a military test explosion have accused Russian authorities of carelessly exposing them to radiation and then forcing them to keep silent. Staff from the Arkhangelsk regional hospital were not informed at first that they were treating irradiated patients, and protective measures were not taken until the next day, they told Russian media this week. In some cases, staff said they were falsely told patients had been decontaminated. One doctor was later found to have the isotope Caesium-137 in his muscle tissue. He was told he must have eaten too many “Fukushima crabs” during a trip to Thailand, his colleague told the news outlet Meduza.…

Explosives expert nicknamed ‘Mr Dynamite’ to help clean up Italian forests flattened by cyclone

Forests in Italy that were devastated by a cyclone last year are to be cleared by an explosives expert nicknamed Mr Dynamite. Vaste swathes of forest in Italy’s north were flattened by the cyclone last October, with the fallen timber blocking roads and farm tracks and impeding the regrowth of young trees. The powerful storm affected woodland from Lombardy in the west to the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the east. Danilo Coppe, who was involved in demolishing the remains of the Morandi bridge in Genoa after it collapsed last year, is now working on a plan to use thousands of small charges to blow up giant tree stumps and tangled…
