Analysis Shows Canada's 87 Richest Families Now Hold as Much Wealth as 12 Million Lowest-Income Canadians
Despite relatively robust investments in the well-being of its citizens, Canada is home to a growing wealth gap, with public policy analysts denouncing political leaders for allowing tax laws that heavily favor the richest Canadians—to the detriment of social welfare programs. The Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives revealed in a new report that the nation’s 87 richest families hold an average of $3 billion in wealth—about as much as the 12 million lowest-income Canadians, or a third of the population, combined. Examining wealth concentration since 1999, senior economist David Macdonald found that the net worth of the 87 richest Canadian families rose by 37 percent in just four years, from…

Sharing Family's Immigrant Story, Stephen Miller's Uncle Horrified by His Xenophobic, Hypocritical Nephew
Recounting their own family’s history as immigrants from eastern Europe at the beginning of the 20th century, the uncle of Stephen Miller, one of the President’s Donald Trump’s top aides and the chief architect of the administration’s hateful immigration agenda, has written a scathing op-ed in which he publicly confesses “his dismay and increasing horror” at the role his nephew has played in implementing the president’s xenophobic and cruel border policies. “Trump and my nephew both know their immigrant and refugee roots. Yet, they repeat the insults and false accusations of earlier generations against these refugees to make them seem less than human.” —David S. Glosser, uncle of Stephen MillerPublished…

'We Can't Let Up Now': After Surviving Telecom Sabotage Effort, California's Net Neutrality Bill Clears Key Hurdle
Thanks to months of sustained grassroots activism, California’s “gold standard” net neutrality bill survived near-successful sabotage efforts by a telecom-backed Democrat and passed out of the state’s Communications and Conveyance Committee on Wednesday by a 9-3 vote, clearing one of the last major hurdles before final passage. “Honestly it’s ridiculous and a bit embarrassing for the Democratic Party that net neutrality activists have had to fight so hard to get this bill passed in a state with a supermajority of lawmakers from a party that professes to love the free and open internet.” —Evan Greer, Fight for the Future”The California net neutrality bill SB 822 would have been dead long…

'Dumbest Policy in the World': Report Details How Canada's Massive Fossil Fuel Subsidies Undermine Climate Action
“What’s the dumbest policy in the world? Public cash for oil and gas!” That’s according to Patrick DeRochie, Climate & Energy program manager for the Canadian group Environmental Defence, who wrote Monday about a new report that aims to shed light on the Canadian government’s hundreds of millions dollars in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. “Actually, the final figure is likely much higher, but a lack of transparency from the federal government makes many subsidies to climate polluters difficult to quantify,” DeRochie added, calling on the Canadian government to disclose just how much it’s doling out to polluters. Public Cash for Oil and Gas (pdf), produced by the #StopFundingFossils…

Condemning Modi's 'Anti-People Policies' Ahead of India's Election, Striking Farmers and Workers Grind New Delhi to Halt
Fed up with the “anti-people policies” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s right-wing government, tens of thousands of farmers and workers in India brought central Delhi to a standstill on Wednesday in a huge demonstration to demand higher wages, debt waivers, and other economic reforms. The protests, marked by crowds of protesters wearing red and carrying red flags lining the entire stretch of Parliament Street, came ahead of next year’s general elections and at the end of a summer when Indians struggled to live on stagnant wages and farmers faced barely-rising prices on the produce they provide to their communities. Demonstrators expressed anger at Modi, who promised during his 2014 campaign…

In 'Wake-Up Call' for Nation, Study Using Industry's Own Data Finds 9 in 10 Coal Plants Are Causing Toxic Pollution
A new study on the dangerous levels of toxic chemicals that nearly all U.S. coal plants are leaving in nearby groundwater should serve as “a wake-up call for the nation.” That’s according to the environmental law non-profit Earthjustice, which worked with the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) to analyze the coal industry’s own data on the toxins its companies are polluting groundwater with, finding that out of 265 coal plants that monitor their surrounding areas, 242 reported unsafe levels of chemicals including arsenic, lithium, and cadmium. The results of the study reveal that about nine out of 10 coal plants in the U.S. are endangering Americans by dumping coal ash into unlined…
