Mistakes of West, Texas Repeated In West Virginia
WASHINGTON, D.C.—“This is an issue of proportionality,” says Dr. Gerald Poje, a former member of the federal U.S. Chemical Safety Board, as he watches me get patted down by a security guard on my way into a session of President Obama’s chemical safety task force on Tuesday. “How are we proportioning our larger social resources for security and safety?” asks Poje while I put back on my belt. “We come into a government building just for a public hearing, and we have half a dozen people at the front gate doing checking. Then you look at what’s missing in our high-hazard chemical infrastructure.” Poje is referring to the failures of…

In ‘No One Is Safe’: Abuses of Women in Iraq’s Criminal Justice System, HRW reveals a pattern of systemic abuse within a failed judicial system characterized by corruption. Residents living near the Eagle Ford Shale were promised riches and jobs when the fracking boom exploded in their region of southern Texas. However, according to a new investigation published Tuesday, with the wells came unchecked toxic emissions that would devastate both their health and the quality of their ‘easy country life.’ While much of the reporting on the negative impact of fracking has focused on the danger it poses to drinking and groundwater resources, this eight-month, joint study by the Center for Public Integrity, Inside Climate News, and the Weather Channel reveals the lesser-known impact on air quality and the unchecked and potentially lethal amounts of toxic chemicals emitted…

Latest Bombings: 'One More Step' Towards War in Gaza?
Israel pounded the Gaza strip with missiles Wednesday night in the most expansive attack on the occupied territory since its eight-day assault in 2012. An ongoing exchange of missiles and rockets between Gaza militants and Israeli Defense Forces escalated over the course of the week, culminating in roughly 29 Israeli airstrikes overnight. IDF authorities say the airstrikes only targeted Hamas bases and Al-Quds Brigades forces, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, but critics have long criticized Israel of engaging in disproportionate response when it comes to comparing the homemade rockets of Gaza militants to its much more advanced weaponry. Critics have also charged that Israeli strikes purportedly only targeting “militants”…

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière slammed U.S. spying as “excessive” and “boundless” in an interview published Wednesday in German magazine Der Spiegel. “If even two-thirds of what Edward Snowden has presented or what has been presented with his name cited as the source is true, then I would conclude that the USA is operating without any kind of boundaries,” charged De Maizière.
