Edinburgh Woollen Mill mulls legal action against BGMEA

Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group (EWM) has said it is mulling legal action against the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) over “baseless claims” which risk “putting the company at jeopardy”. The company, which owns brands Bonmarché, Peacocks and Jaeger, said claims in the media that it still owes 26.7 million pounds to Bangladesh suppliers are incorrect and refer to “an old figure that is completely baseless and without any merit”. EWM Group chairman John Herring wrote to the president of BGMEA urging the organisation to “correct falsehoods” about outstanding debts to BGMEA members. He said the lack of clarification around the claims now risks jeopardising “critical” relationships with credit…

In a statement Friday night, Planned Parenthood said: “We share the concerns of many Americans that extremists are creating a poisonous environment that feeds domestic terrorism in this country.” Barack Obama said on Saturday the US had “to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them”. “Period,” the president added, in a statement released by the White House. “Enough is enough.” U.S. Sen. Blow, Rice family attorney Jonathan Abady called the decision “a catastrophic and pernicious miscarriage of justice.” “All the family wanted was fairness and accountability,” Abady said. “They got neither.” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty announced Monday afternoon that an Ohio grand jury had opted not to indict officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback in the shooting, which took place on November 22, 2014 in a park where Rice was playing with a…

With State Poised to Squash Rooftop Solar, Clean Energy Fight Heats Up In Nevada

Renewable energy advocates in Nevada are outraged by the state’s solar-killing moves, and they’re not going down without a fight. The state’s Public Utilities Commission considered requests Wednesday from solar company groups, homeowners, activists, and the state consumer advocate to put a stay on a rate hike that took effect January 1. The Republican-appointed Commission (PUC) in late December voted to increase a fixed monthly fee for solar customers by about 40 percent while simultaneously reducing the amount customers get paid for excess power they sell to the grid. It also made these changes retroactive—a move one solar executive said would “sabotage” consumers’ investments. Clean energy advocates swiftly decried the…

As Trump Gains Momentum, Both Sides Ask: Who Can Stop Him?

With big primary wins in the rear-view mirror and more predicted for the days ahead, Donald Trump’s seemingly unstoppable momentum has some Republicans on Capitol Hill—not to mention political pundits and Democrats everywhere—increasingly on edge. Though Trump on Wednesday picked up his first Congressional endorsements from House Republicans Duncan Hunter of California and Chris Collins of New York, “a number of Hill Republicans are watching his rise with angst,” Politico reported.  “Every one of Clinton’s (considerable) weaknesses plays to every one of Trump’s strengths, whereas every one of Trump’s (few) weaknesses plays to every one of Sanders’s strengths.”—Nathan Robinson, Current Affairs And they aren’t alone. “A thousand ridiculous accidents needed to…

The Koch Brothers' Dirty War on Solar Power

fter decades of false starts, solar power in America is finally poised for its breakthrough moment. The price of solar panels has dropped by more than 80 percent since President Obama took office, and the industry is beginning to compete with coal and natural gas on economics alone. But the birth of Big Solar poses a grave threat to those who profit from burning fossil fuels. And investor-owned utilities, together with Koch-brothers-funded front groups like American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), are mounting a fierce, rear-guard resistance at the state level – pushing rate hikes and punishing fees for homeowners who turn to solar power. Their efforts have darkened green-energy prospects…
