‘I would struggle to watch the 2008 Heineken Cup final again – I’d just cringe’

THE BEST DAY of Denis Hurley’s career threatened to be the worst. Never mind the outcome, the stinging tears bursting out of hard men’s eyes, the medal dangling round the neck, the whoops and cheers drowning out the click-click-click of studs on a dressing-room floor. Never mind the result, a 16-13 victory over Toulouse, or the consoling words from those who recognised a player suffering angst. Never mind that three months earlier he was playing for Cork Con in front of 100 people in Temple Hill and now on a stage watched by 74,500 pairs of eyes. Never mind that he had won a Heineken Cup final on just his…

Erasmus: ‘A Lions match is almost like a World Cup final’

RASSIE ERASMUS HAS compared the three-test series between the Springboks and the British and Irish Lions to a World Cup final in terms of status. The much-hyped tour is finally going ahead after a year of speculation regarding its viability in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, each of the tour games, including the test series will take place behind closed doors. Nonetheless, Erasmus is relieved his players will get the chance to experience the drama of being involved against the British and Irish tourists. “We would love there to be crowds but we are delighted the series is going ahead because some players wouldn’t have the opportunity to…

‘At any interface point in the game, there is always going to be friction’

IF YOU JUDGE the IRFU’s current performance against their own strategic plan, then you wouldn’t be giving them a particularly high mark. That plan – released in 2018 as Joe Schmidt and co. beat all around them – requires Andy Farrell’s Ireland to win the next two Six Nations titles in order to achieve one particular objective – win two or more championships from 2019 to 2023.  The objective of reaching the World Cup semi-finals in 2019 wasn’t achieved and it remains to be seen if they can overcome a tough draw to do it in 2023, while Ireland currently sit outside the top three of the World Rugby rankings…

Ulster ready to pull shutters down on long season with trip to Edinburgh

SO, ONE FOR the road. After emerging from lockdown last August, losing to Connacht in the first of their 29 games across 10 months, Ulster are finally ready to pull down the shutters on their season. There have been five defeats to Leinster, two to Toulouse, a Pro14 semi-final win they’ll never forget, a Challenge Cup semi-final defeat that’ll forever haunt them, and now this, a dead rubber in Edinburgh they could really do without. Overall it has been a mixed year. The spirit they showed to come from behind to defeat Edinburgh in last September’s 2019/20 semi-final was also evident in the 2020/21 regular season, when they won 14…

‘It’s a good lesson for them. You’ve got to respect things around a fire pit’

Updated Jun 9th 2021, 12:05 PM MUNSTER SENIOR COACH Stephen Larkham expressed the province’s hope that their players will learn from an incident involving a fire pit that left four of them injured. Springboks duo Damian de Allende and RG Snyman, as well as Ireland internationals CJ Stander and Mike Haley, were injured in last weekend’s accident, which occurred when one of the Munster players threw petrol onto the fire, causing the petrol can to go up in flames and explode. Stander and Haley sustained burns to their hands, while de Allende and Snyman suffered “more substantial burns to [their] legs, hands, and face,” according to Munster. While Stander and Haley…
