WATCH: Shaun Stevenson sets up try in Chiefs’ victory over Waratahs

Chiefs flyer Shaun Stevenson made his mark as he set up a try for his team-mate Emoni Narawa in the dying moments of their 24-14 victory over the Waratahs in Sydney on Friday.

Stevenson, who is the top try-scorer in Super Rugby Pacific this year, turned provider as he caught the home side’s defence napping with his assist.

The match was evenly balanced at the time, with the Chiefs holding a slender 17-14 lead, when the visitors launched an attack deep inside the Waratahs‘ half.

Stevenson gathered a pass from Cortez Ratima before stabbing a grubber kick through which bounced off the leg of Taleni Seu and Narawa gathered the ball on his way over the try-line.

Damian McKenzie, who was playing in his 100th game  for the Chiefs, slotted the conversion from close to the touchline to seal his team’s fifth successive victory of the Super Rugby Pacific season.

The men from Hamilton had to dig deep for the result as the Waratahs proved difficult to break down and the home side were unlucky not to get a bonus-point from this fixture.

Earlier, the Chiefs opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Bryn Gatland crossed for the opening try, which was converted by McKenzie, but the Waratahs struck back when Jake Gordon dotted down midway through the half. Ben Donaldson added the extras which meant the teams changed sides at half-time deadlocked at 7-7.

The visitors drew first blood in the second half when McKenzie slotted a penalty five minutes after the restart, before Narawa went over for another converted try in the 54th minute.

The Waratahs responded with a five-pointer from Michael Hooper on the hour-mark and Donaldson’s conversion made sure that there would be a tense finish.

Both sides gave their all as they tried to secure the win and the visitors got the rub of the green in the end when Narawa collected Stevenson’s grubber kick before crossing the whitewash.
