Manchester United news: Sir Alex Ferguson to return to Old Trafford dugout to mark 1999 Champions League win against Bayern Munich
Sir Alex Ferguson will return to the Old Trafford dugout to celebrate 20 years since Manchester United’s famous treble.
The legendary manager will take charge of the Red Devils for an anniversary match with Bayern Munich on May 26, two decades on from the dramatic 1999 Champions League final at the Nou Camp.
“I’m really looking forward to what will be a special day at Old Trafford,” Sir Alex said.
“It will be great to catch up with some familiar faces and a great opportunity to support the work of Manchester United Foundation.”
A host of former players from the iconic 1998/99 season will feature to mark the unique treble, which is yet to be replicated by any English club.
The match will remember the night Sir Alex’s men came from behind with two late goals to win the Champions League in dramatic fashion.
United’s current interim boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, scored the winner in the third minute of stoppage time after Teddy Sheringham had levelled just two minutes earlier.
Fears surrounding Sir Alex’s health were sparked earlier this year when he suffered a brain haemorrhage.
He was rushed to hospital on May 5 for emergency brain surgery, but has since returned to full health.
The Scot, who lifted more than 30 trophies in his time at Old Trafford, still holds influence on the club’s board.
