Fans joke Manchester United target Matthijs de Ligt will ‘fit right in’ at Old Trafford after error against England

Matthijs de Ligt went from zero to hero in the Netherland’s 3-1 Nations League semi-final victory over England.

The 19-year-old Dutch defender is wanted by the likes of Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, and Manchester United after an incredible season with Ajax.

But he showed he is human after all, taking a poor touch in the box before bringing down Marcus Rashford, who converted the resulting penalty in Guimaraes.

Then moments later, he was nutmegged by Jadon Sancho as Rashford nearly doubled his tally.

However, De Ligt showed his class and atoned for his error with a brilliant bullet head, before mistakes by John Stones and Ross Barkley sent the Netherlands to the Nations League final.

Nonetheless, his first-half display featured the sort of defending that was commonplace at Old Trafford this season, with the Red Devils conceding a staggering 54 goals in the Premier League.

The club want De Ligt, valued at around £70million, to come and tighten things up.

But these fans have other ideas:

De Ligt recently revealed Rashford is the toughest striker he has ever come up against.

Speaking in a Q&A with Ajax TV, De Ligt was asked who his hardest opponent has been and after a moment of consideration he delivered his answer with a wry smile.

“That has to be Rashford, from Manchester United,” he said. “Great player, quick, technical skills.”
