Women’s World Cup round-up: Germany scrape past China, Spain claim comeback win over South Africa, Norway thrash Nigeria
The 2019 Women’s World Cup is off and running and there were three brilliant games played on Saturday.
Below you can read about the best of the action in France.
Germany Women 1-0 China Women
Germany began their Women’s World Cup campaign with an unconvincing win over China.
Teenager Giulia Gwinn scored the only goal of the game in the 66th minute but the Germans rode their luck with Yang Li hitting the post shortly before the half-time break.
Spain Women 3-1 South Africa Women
Jennifer Hermoso scored from the penalty spot twice as Spain came from behind to beat World Cup first-timers South Africa, who finished the game with ten players.
Thembi Kgatlana gave South Africa a shock lead with a chipped finish but Atletico Madrid’s Hermoso scored both spot-kicks in the second-half.
The first was awarded for a handball and the second for Nothando Vilakazi’s rash challenge.
Lucia Garcia added a third with a cool finish in the 89th minute.
Norway Women 3-0 Nigeria Women
Norway cruised to victory over Nigeria in their Women’s World Cup Group A match in Reims.
Guro Reiten opened the scoring with a deflected shot in the 16th minute before Lisa-Marie Utland doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark with just her fifth touch of the game.
Norway had their third goal in the 36th minute thanks to an own goal by Osinachi Ohale when she poked the ball into her own net after a cross from the right.
Sunday’s matches see Australia face Italy and Brazil take on Jamaica.
And then Phil Neville’s England side get their campaign under way against Scotland in Nice, a game you can listen to LIVE on talkSPORT.
