The embarrassing Manchester United statistic which suggests No.7 shirt has been ‘cursed’ since Cristiano Ronaldo left

A decade ago, Cristiano Ronaldo broke the hearts of Manchester United fans everywhere.

Real Madrid offered a world record £80million for the Portugal captain and, despite his reluctance, Sir Alex Ferguson kept his promise and sanctioned a deal.

At the age of just 24, Ronaldo still had his best years ahead of him and went on to become a Los Blancos legend.

However, United have toiled ever since.

Ten years on, the Red Devils are nothing more than an imitation of the side which dominated Europe during Ronaldo’s reign and they have never been able to successfully replace him.

The ‘curse’ surrounding that famous No.7 shirt has tainted Alexis Sanchez, with the former Arsenal man struggling to find any sort of form at Old Trafford.

In fact, since Ronaldo left Manchester in 2009, United’s No.7’s have managed to score a combined 14 Premier League goals.

In that same period, the 34-year-old has managed to net 332 times.

While perhaps it may be a tad extreme to retire the shirt, players would perhaps be wise to avoid picking the No.7 at Old Trafford for the time being…
