Denzel Dumfries: Profile on Manchester United transfer target and alternative to Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Manchester United’s summer transfer business continues to be splashed across the backpages and now a new name has been linked with club.

What’s the gossip?
According to The Sun, Dumfries has been identified as a possible solution to the club’s right-back issue.
Antonio Valencia has now left the club, while Diogo Dalot is a touch too raw to pin down the position as his own right now.
This has led to the Red Devils searching for another full-back and after mulling over moves for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Thomas Meunier, who would cost too much, the club are now targeting Dumfries from PSV Eindhoven.
Club career so far?
The Rotterdam-born star has slowly risen to the top of the game in his homeland.
Now 23, Dumfries started his senior career with second division side Sparta Rotterdam in 2014 and after a season and a half in their first-team, where he helped them earn promotion to the Eredivisie and then kept them in the top-flight.
A transfer to Heerenveen followed in 2017 where Dumfries impressed again with three goals and eight assists and he was signed by PSV Eindhoven for €5.5million in 2018.
He’s gone from strength to strength and is their first choice right-back having replaced Santiago Arias, who joined Atletico Madrid last summer, scoring four goals and laying on seven others for team-mates, while also playing all six of their Champions League group games against Tottenham, Barcelona, and Inter Milan.
How much is he likely to cost?
The Sun report suggests a £25million bid could get the player but just knowing Manchester United are interest, plus his international performances this summer, might make that rise a million or two.
International experience?
In 2014, at the age of 17, Dumfries was in the Dutch second division with Sparta Rotterdam and received a call-up to the Aruba national team.
He played in two friendly matches with Guam, scoring once but these were his only appearances for the Caribbean island.
Dumfries then became a youth international for the Netherlands and after playing for the Under-20s and Under-21s he became a full international in late 2018.
He’s now Ronaldo Koeman’s No.1 right-back and starred in their UEFA Nations League matches against England and Portugal this year.
What is being said about him?
After a vital goal-line clearance against VVV-Venlo, manager Mark van Bommel said: “He does a fantastic job, only he can do that. Sometimes he also does that during training. He defends the goal and this was the ultimate moment.”
How will he fit in to Manchester United?
It’s not the hardest to figure out given he’s a right-back, but his role in the team will be interesting.
Dumfries is a fairly attacking full-back, so it’s likely we’ll be seeing him drive forward plenty and cross the ball, more often than not low, into the area.
He does go on forays forward without the ball and becomes a weapon in the box thanks to his aerial ability, while he’s got a strong left foot too, making him unpredictable in the penalty area.
Dumfries is very willing to put his body on the line and defends well against wingers, getting touch-tight when needed, while also coping when it comes to a foot-race.
He can get a little nervous and at times and opt for safety first, which is no issue, but against NAC Breda this season he became timid when supporters whistled him for passing backwards too often.
Is this how Man United will look with Dumfries?
