James Maddison boots: England and Leicester player to honour Sophie Taylor at European Under-21 Championship
When James Maddison plays for England at the European Under-21 Championship he will do so in special boots with the image of Sophie Taylor, a young supporter who died from bone cancer.
Sophie, from Norwich, died in January at the age of five and Maddison became her friend when she was a mascot for the club during his time at Carrow Road.
Here's how the opening weekend of the Premier League will get under way for the 2019/20 season
“The unbelievably special football boots I will be wearing during the European Championships for England. My best friend always with me @SuperStrongSoph,” he tweeted, thanking Puma for the ‘surprise’.
The boots feature a picture of Sophie, and the words ‘there is a new angel in Heaven’.
There is also a picture of the top he revealed after scoring against Burnley in March, which reads “RIP Sophie I Love You”.
However, for removing his Leicester shirt he was booked by referee Michael Oliver – as the laws of the game dictate – which many lambasted the official for, though Maddison asked for people to stop the abuse.
“Regarding tweets about Michael Oliver, he’s just doing his job and didn’t have a choice. He didn’t enjoy showing me a yellow and shared his condolences about the passing of Sophie which I thought was very respectful.”
