Arsenal fans react as David Ornstein confirms Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on signing William Saliba from Saint Etienne

Life as an Arsenal fan must be pretty testing at the moment.

After failing to qualify for the Champions League once again last season, the club watched Aaron Ramsey waltz off to Juventus on a free transfer.

Spirits were raised when rumours of a bid for Wilfried Zaha began to intensify, with the Crystal Palace winger reportedly desperate to join his boyhood club.

But those hopes were soon dashed when it transpired the Eagles had simply rejected Arsenal’s measly bid, some £40million off Zaha’s valuation.

Club captain Laurent Koscielny then refused to join his Gunners teammate’s on pre-season tour, but the news was initially well-received because the signing of William Saliba, the 18-year-old from Saint Etienne, was nearing completion.

Or so it seemed…

Perry Groves calls on Arsenal to significantly invest if they want to finish in the top four

According to BBC journalist David Ornstein, one of the most reliable sources for Arsenal news, bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur have made a last-ditch bid to steal the centre-back from the Gunners’ clutches.

Ornstein Tweeted: “Negotiations between Arsenal, Saint Etienne and Saliba were in their very final stages – much of it already in the hands of lawyers to agree wording of contracts etc – but Tottenham have reignited their interest and are now pushing hard to get the deal completed.”

As you can imagine, the news has not gone down particularly well, with Arsenal fans lambasting the journalist.
