The Belgian joined from Chelsea on a five-year deal last month and there has been plenty of speculation as to what number he would wear.
Hazard, who wore the No. 10 shirt at Chelsea after taking over from Juan Mata, hoped to persuade current Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric to let him wear the iconic number at the Bernabeu.
“I have been able to talk to Modric through [Mateo] Kovacic,” Hazard said. “I was joking when I asked him to lend me the No.10.
“He said no, so I’ll have to find another number.”
Prior to his arrival, there were Hazard shirts in the Real Madrid shop with the No. 7 on the back, but according to Spanish publication Marca, current owner Mariano Diaz is unwilling to relinquish the shirt.
Hazard was expected to be the next player to sport the iconic number previously made famous by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul.
Back in 2003, Beckham was the most famous No.7 in the world, but when he joined from Manchester United, wore 23, in part due to his admiration for NBA icon Michael Jordan, who had the same number during his time at the Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards.
Hazard has been part of a £250million-plus spending spree under Zinedine Zidane which has seen Luka Jovic, Ferland Mendy, Eder Militao, and Rodrygo arrive so far.
