Manchester United transfer news: Sean Longstaff flattered by Red Devils interest but insists ‘my job is at Newcastle’

Sean Longstaff admitted he is flattered by the interest Manchester United have shown in him.

The Red Devils have been linked with a big money move for the Newcastle United midfielder.

The 21-year-old only made eight first-team starts under Rafael Benitez last season, but his impressive performances caught the eye of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Magpies are believed to have slapped a £50million price tag on Longstaff, a price United are unwilling to match.

He insisted his focus at the moment was on the club’s pre-season training tour to China with Steve Bruce now in charge.

Longstaff told the Chronicle: “If somebody had said to be me a year ago I would be in this position, I would probably have laughed at them.

“This time last year, I was deciding whether to go to League One on loan. A year on, you are seeing your name linked with one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“For me, it is all a positive really. It gives you even more confidence. When I was in for a short amount of time, people took notice of me.

“It is flattering, but my job is at Newcastle. The new boss is coming in and it’s a clean slate for everybody – including me.

“I just get my head down and work on the pitch. Like anybody knows, you are no use to anybody if you aren’t fit.”

Michael Chopra blasts Mike Ashley and says Steve Bruce not good enough for Newcastle

Steve Bruce was appointed as Newcastle manager earlier this week and plans to speak to Longstaff about his future.

Bruce will make it clear to the midfielder he does not want him to leave this summer, according to Sky Sports.

It has also been claimed that Longstaff is excited at the prospect of working with the new manager and establishing himself as a first-team regular.
