The Reds in June beat Tottenham 2-0 to become European champions for a sixth time, with skipper Henderson wanting to savour the initial celebrations with his manager and veteran team-mate Milner.

However, the pair both rejected Henderson’s offer, with Milner telling the club captain in no uncertain terms he’d be one lifting the trophy on that historic night.
“That night was not about me lifting the trophy,” Henderson told the Liverpool Echo. “I felt me, Millie [Milner] and the gaffer should have lifted it together.
“It was not about me standing at the front lifting the trophy, it was more about the team.
“When I look back and see the faces of the lads, that’s what means more to me.
“I think everyone looks at the captain to lift the trophy and everyone speaks highly of the captain when you win a competition, but if you rewind to a year or two ago, people would have been criticising the way I am and asking if I should be captain or not.
“That is not for me to get involved with because they do not really know.”
He added: “I asked Millie and the gaffer because I felt as though Millie is a big part of the squad
“I know I wear the armband when I play but he wore it a lot that time as well when I haven’t been playing.
“He is a big part of the dressing room. He is the most experienced player and won a lot of trophies.
“I feel as though without him it would have been different.
“And what we did that night wouldn’t have been possible without the manager, and I felt as though he deserved to do that. But he said no.”
