Manchester United fans unfurl ‘United Against Racism’ banner at Old Trafford in light of Paul Pogba abuse
Manchester United fans unfurled a banner at Old Trafford in support of Paul Pogba after he was subjected to vile racist abuse.
The World Cup winning midfielder became the latest high-profile player to be racially abused online after missing a penalty in his side’s draw against Wolves on Monday.
Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham and Reading’s Yakou Meite have also been targeted by racist trolls over the past week after failing to score spot-kicks.
The incidents have led to greater calls for Twitter to take stronger action against online hate, and the company has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation.
Twitter had already planned a meeting with anti-racism body Kick It Out in the coming weeks, and it is now looking to widen its discussions by bringing in a host of leading footballing organisations.
And it seems as though these United fans have had enough and wanted to make a stand of their own.
The clash at Old Trafford did not start at all in the manner Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have wanted.
Luke Shaw was forced off with an injury in the first half, before Palace took a shock lead at shortly after as Jordan Ayew found the target.
