Chelsea news: Frank Lampard confirms Jorginho has taken over from Ross Barkley as Blues penalty taker

Frank Lampard has confirmed that Jorginho is the club’s penalty taker after the midfielder scored from the spot in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Brighton.

There has been some confusion over who takes the penalties at the club with Lampard previously saying Ross Barkley was their man before he missed against Valencia.

Pedro then stepped up and took the spot kick against Grimsby in the Carabao Cup, which he scored, despite Barkley being on the pitch.

And both Barkley and Pedro were on the field when Mason Mount was brought down in the second half at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but neither of them took that penalty.

Jorginho stepped up and fired it in and Lampard has clarified the situation.

He told talkSPORT: “Jorginho is the penalty taker now. Ross missed one and it’s not a slight on Ross because I missed some in my career.

“Jorginho’s very confident and we made the decision he is the penalty taker. He wasn’t on the pitch the other day and hence Pedro takes them.

“I don’t mind in having different penalty takers but when Jorginho’s on the pitch he can take them and if he takes them like today he can keep going.”

Chelsea picked up their first home win and clean sheet of the season following the 2-0 win over Brighton, with Willian scoring the second.

Lampard was delighted but thought his side could have added more.

“I’m very happy,” he added. “At half-time I was slightly worried as I think we had 17 shots and at that point you wonder if it’s your day.

“We created a lot and dominated from start to finish to be fair and when we got our breakthrough it didn’t feel like we were completely in control because you worry as we haven’t had a clean sheet.

“I’m happy on that front. Happy for the team and Kepa and the back four because clean sheets are a breeder of confidence and we got one today and we were very comfortable.

“The crowd really relate to him (Tammy Abraham) because you can see he tries and holds the ball up and chases things. He did that. He did typical Tammy without the goal.

“Mason (Mount) was fantastic. He had energy, quality, change of direction and brightness to win the penalty.

“It was a good day and I’m pleased. The only thing is we could have scored more goals. We could be more clinical in the box and that would have made it a much easier afternoon.

“That’s a good feeling for the team and we needed a result like that.”
