Dietmar Hamann: Liverpool legend says Manchester United could WIN Champions League in shock claim
Manchester United could WIN the Champions League this season, according to Liverpool legend Didi Hamann.
The Red Devils take on Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening as their European campaign resumes at the round of 16 stage.
Despite many considering United were handed one of the toughest draws in the competition, the Old Trafford club’s recent form has made them real contenders to defeat the French side over two legs.
United are unbeaten in 11 matches since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed their caretaker manager, with a remarkable 10 wins in that time including against Tottenham and Arsenal.
He now leads the Red Devils into Europe for the first time, and United have been handed a couple of huge boosts in the weeks building up to Tuesday’s first leg clash.
Neymar was ruled out both legs last month with a metatarsal injury, while Edinson Cavani, the striker, hurt his thigh during Saturday’s league defeat of Bordeaux and is now confirmed it miss the first leg.
The Uruguay international could also be sidelined for the return fixture in Paris next month, meaning United take on PSG with the French side missing two of their three star attackers; Kylian Mbappe remains available, however.
And, with United flying under Solskjaer, Hamaan believes the Red Devils are definitely in the running to win the entire competition!
“It looks absolutely wide open with no outstanding team,” Hamann told racingpost.com/sport. “I could make a claim about probably nine or ten clubs, and Manchester United now have to be included.
“They are a huge price.
“The point about the Champions League is that it’s a two-part schedule and what happens in the first part is largely irrelevant.
“United under Solskjaer go into the knockout phase buzzing, take on PSG at the perfect time with Neymar out and they should fear no one.”
