Cam Newton injury update: Panthers QB to see foot specialist, season reportedly in question | Sporting News
Cam Newton’s return may not happen this season after all.
The Panthers quarterback, who has dealt with a nagging foot injury and missed the team’s last five games, is en route to Green Bay, Wisconsin, to visit foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, ESPN reported Friday morning.
NFL Media added the visit is meant to examine why Newton’s sprained foot isn’t improving despite weeks of rest. The report noted “playing football is a long way off” for Newton.
Carolina ruled Newton out of its Week 9 home game against the Titans earlier this week.
Newton completed 50 of 89 passes for 572 yards with an interception and two fumbles as the Panthers got off to an 0-2 start. Since Kyle Allen took over, Carolina is 4-1 (4-3 overall).
Newton has been the face of the franchise since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2011, but he’s been hampered by injuries the past couple of seasons and has had issues with his accuracy downfield.
Newton traveled with the team to San Francisco in Week 8 to witness Allen’s first career loss. His occasional appearance at practice gave the franchise and its fans some hope for his return, but this latest update makes it seem as if Newton’s entire 2019 season is in jeopardy.
