Tottenham wonderkid Troy Parrott tipped for big future by Republic of Ireland teammate Jack Byrne after full debut
Republic of Ireland international Jack Byrne has applauded the talents of Tottenham Hotspur wonderkid Troy Parrott after their international debuts.
Byrne, who plays for Shamrock Rovers, and Parrott both made their first starts for Mick McCarthy’s side in their 3-1 victory over New Zealand.
The 23-year-old, who grew up in the same part of Dublin as the 17-year-old, has taken the Spurs striker under his wing and the pair have made their friendship clear with multiple social media posts over the international break.
And Byrne, once on the books of Man City, believes Parrott has a fine future ahead of himself after making a positive impact in the game against the All Whites.
He said: “He’s obviously at Tottenham for a reason, he’s a top young talent. He’s 17 years of age and he’s just made his debut for Ireland – and I thought he was brilliant.
“He’s 17, it’s an unbelievable achievement. He’s a top striker for his age in the world, probably. He’s at Tottenham and he’s doing really well, and you can see why.”
The emergence of the duo comes at a key time for manager McCarthy with Euro 2020 qualification on the line and Byrne has insisted he’s ready to step up if needed, despite currently playing in the League of Ireland Premier Division.
“I’d try to slot in to the best of my ability if I was called upon,” he said.
“I definitely wouldn’t say ‘no’. If I’m called upon, then yes, I feel as if I could help the team.
“I feel like I’m in a good place. I’m working hard and I’m getting a bit of luck at the moment, and long may it continue.
“It’s not my decision, it’s up to the manager. Look, he’s going to pick a team to go out there and do a job in one of the biggest games in recent Irish footballing history.
“Whatever team he picks, we’ll all be behind it.”
