How many goals has Harry Kane scored for England and how many does he need to equal Wayne Rooney’s record?
It’s been a very fruitful international break for England, who scored eleven goals in their two Euro 2020 qualifying victories over Montenegro and Kosovo respectively.
Four of those goals were scored by captain Harry Kane, who has leapt up the Three Lions’ all-time goalscoring charts.
Kane moved past Frank Lampard, Tom Finney, Nat Lofthouse and Alan Shearer in England’s all-time leading goalscorers list during Thursday night’s victory over Montenegro.
The striker fired in an impressive hat-trick in the first half of their rampant victory at Wembley.
Kane helped England race to a 5-0 lead at half-time, scoring two with his head and the other a clever finish with his right foot. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Marcus Rashford scored the other goals in the first half.
Aleksandar Sofranac’s own goal and a late Tammy Abraham strike secured the 7-0 win that confirmed England’s place at Euro 2020 next summer.
In Kosovo on Sunday, Kane added another goal to his impressive collection as Gareth Southgate’s men romped to a 4-0 win – Harry Winks, Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount getting the other goals.
Kane is actually the first England player to score in every match of a qualifying campaign.
And his goalscoring exploits have almost made England’s convincing qualification for the finals become of secondary importance.
The Tottenham hotshot is now sixth in England’s all-time list.
But how many does Kane need to become England’s top goalscorer and overtake record holder Wayne Rooney?
You can see the table below of England’s top scorers and how far away Kane is from being no.1.
England's top goalscorers
1) Wayne Rooney – 53
2) Bobby Charlton – 49
3) Gary Lineker – 48
4) Jimmy Greaves – 44
5) Michael Owen – 40
6) Harry Kane – 32
=7) Alan Shearer – 30
=7) Tom Finney – 30
=7) Nat Lofthouse – 30
=10) Vivian Woodward – 29
=10) Frank Lampard – 29
It’s incredible progress from Kane particularly because he only made his England debut in March 2015 – a game where he scored with his first touch of the ball.
And at just 26 years old, he certainly has the time to continue moving up the goalscoring charts, provided he can stay fit and in great form.
Kane will be back in action for his club Tottenham on Saturday, who face West Ham at the London Stadium in the lunchtime kick-off – a game you can listen to LIVE on talkSPORT.
