Emiliano Sala: Cardiff manager Neil Warnock and chief executive Ken Choo to attend funeral in Argentina
Emiliano Sala’s funeral will be attended by Cardiff manager Neil Warnock and chief executive Ken Choo.
Sala became Cardiff’s club-record signing when bought by the Welsh club for £15million last month, but the 28-year-old was killed days later when a plane he was travelling on crashed in the English channel.
A privately-funded search found the location of the plane and recovered a body from the wreckage, which was later identified as Sala.
Pilot David Ibbotson, who was the only other person on the flight, remains missing with a crowdfunding campaign set up to ensure the search for him continues. Cardiff owner Vincent Tan has made a personal donation of £50,000 to the campaign.
Sala’s body will be repatriated to Argentina on Friday ahead of a wake at boyhood club San Martin de Progreso the following day.
Bluebirds manager Warnock and Choo, the club’s chief executive, will be part of a Cardiff delegation attending the funeral.
Warnock has previously called Sala’s death ‘a loss to everyone in football’ and his team have worn daffodils on their shirts to pay their respects to the former Nantes striker.
“You’ve seen tributes from all over the place,” Warnock said, “from little clubs in the fourth division to the top clubs.
“When something like this happens it brings all the football family together.
“It’s a loss to everyone in football. I know we’re the closest, but when you see the response from world-class players and the amount of money they were able to raise (for the recovery process) in the space of a few hours was amazing.”
