One position every Premier League club needs to improve in the January transfer window

The January transfer window is just around the corner and we’re sure top Premier League clubs are getting ready to make big signings.

The rumour mill is already in full swing with plenty of speculation ahead of the window opening.

Arsenal are just one club set to do business as they threaten to drop out of the top six.

Liverpool and Watford, meanwhile, have already got deals done with Takumi Minamino and Joao Pedro set to finalise switches on January 1.

Here at talkSPORT.com, we have taken a look what position each Premier League club needs to strengthen.

Arsenal – Centre-back

The Gunners have looked less than convincing at centre-back this season and are missing Laurent Koscielny, who left in the summer.

They signed William Saliba, who went straight back out on loan at Saint-Etienne, and David Luiz before the window closed.

Their options at the back are Luiz, Rob Holding, Sokratis and Callum Chambers and could used another addition with the long-term in mind.

Aston Villa – Striker

Striker Wesley, who cost Villa £22million, has started the season well with four goals in eight games.

The Midlands club could do with some more options up front and they have been consistently linked with Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

You get the feeling the transfer window will make or break their season.

Bournemouth – Full-back

Cherries £13m summer signing Lloyd Kelly has been fighting his way back from an ankle injury and has yet to play a Premier League game for the club.

Charlie Daniels was ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury while club captain Simon Francis has only just returned after a knee injury and will be 35 next year.

Extra cover at full-back is an essential area of improvement for Eddie Howe.

Brighton – Central midfield

The Seagulls invested heavily in the summer by strengthening their attack and defence.

Striker Neal Maupay was signed for £20m from Brentford while they paid £18m for Genk winger Leandro Trossard.

Centre-back Adam Webster was also added from Bristol City and cost nearly £20m.

Brighton did sign Aaron Mooy on loan but it is one area they are lacking in depth.

Burnley – Full-back

Sean Dyce has good options at centre-back with James Tarkowski, Ben Mee and Ben Gibson to choose from.

Matt Lowton and Erik Pieters have been used as the full-backs this season but both are the wrong side of 30 and replacements could soon be needed.

Chelsea – Striker

Chelsea have managed to get out of their transfer ban so we could see movement at Stamford Bridge.

Some will say they need a new left-back but with Olivier Giroud set to leave and Michy Batshuayi a possible out too, Tammy Abraham will need a backup.

Crystal Palace – Right-back

Palace sold Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United for around £50million in the summer and he was not replaced.

Roy Hodgson’s side have made a strong start to the season and they may be wise to reinvest some of that cash in a replacement during Janaury.

Everton – Striker

Goals are a problem for Everton and they have scored just 20 of them in their first 18 games.

Moise Kean has failed to score since he joined from Juventus and they are in desperate need of a proven goalscorer.

Carlo Ancelotti will be desperate for an addition up top.

Leicester – Centre-back

Brendan Rodgers’ side have been strong this season and have few areas of weakness.

They did sell Harry Maguire for £80million during the summer and he was not replaced.

Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans have done a top job so far but extra reinforcements would be wise with Wes Morgan on the bench and Filip Benkovic in the Under-23s.

Liverpool – A squad player

There is strength everywhere on the pitch for Liverpool and they have the most complete squad in the Premier League.

It is unlikely they make any more signings in January after signing Takumi Minamino but a versatile squad player who can make an impact from the bench would be ideal.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s injury could mean a central midfielder is on the agenda too.

Manchester City – Centre-back

City are threadbare in the position with Aymeric Laporte and John Stones out injured, while they did not replace Vincent Kompany in the summer.

Fernandinho has been partnering Nicolas Otamendi but extra cover is at centre-back the position Pep Guardiola is most in need of.

Manchester United – Striker

Goals have been a problem for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side with just 26 scored in 18 game – barely more than strugglers Aston Villa.

Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez both joined Inter Milan over the summer, the former on a permanent deal and the latter on loan, but no replacements were signed.

The onus has been put on Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and teenager Mason Greenwood.

Adding more options up front is a must for Manchester United and Erling Haaland is the man being heavily linked right now.

Newcastle – Defender

Steve Bruce will want to shore up his backline heading into the second half of the season and they have reportedly been targeting a former player.

The Mail Online claim Newcastle want to bring Lewis Gibson, who is at Everton, back to the club, while fellow Toffee Mason Holgate has also been linked.

Further forward a move for Arsenal defensive midfielder Granit Xhaka has been mentioned following his row with Gunners fans.

Norwich – Centre-back

The Canaries have been shipping goals this season with 21 in just eight games.

They will not stay up this season if they continue to let goals in at that rate, no matter how many goals Teemu Pukki scores.

Extra defensive reinforcements are a must for Daniel Farke who has seen injuries decimate his team.

Sheffield United – Striker

The Blades shelled out around £17m for Oli McBurnie during the summer and while he scored at the weekend he has not adapted to life in the Premier League just yet.

Goals could be a problem for Chris Wilder as they have scored just 22 in 18 games with forwards only getting 10 of them.

With their style of play, goals up top aren’t necessarily essential but they really would help.

They have already been linked to Brentford forward Ollie Watkins this January to bolster his attacking options.

Southampton – midfield

The Saints signed Danny Ings and Che Adams for £20m and £15m respectively over the summer while they also have plenty of defensive options.

The biggest area of concern for Ralph Hasenhuttl should be in his midfield with someone who can break up play and win the ball back an essential addition.

Tottenham – right-back

This has become a problem area for Spurs in a position that was once a huge strength.

Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier used to play in tandem at the position but Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters are not of the same calibre.

Watford – Striker

It is hard to choose just one area that Watford need to improve after their disastrous start to the season.

They have struggled in front of goal and the signs are not promising right now.

Just over a goal every other game is not good enough right now and that needs to be sorted out before anything else.

West Ham – Goalkeeper

The Hammers have made significant investment further up the pitch and it is probably time they splashed out on a goalkeeper.

The three currently in their squad, Lukasz Fabianski, Roberto and David Martin, have a combined age of 100. A long-term replacement for the former is required.

A couple of bright showings from Martin saved the Hammers from further despair after the calamitous Roberto replaced Fabianski, who suffered an injury earlier in the campaing.

Wolves – Defender

Wolves invested heavily in their attacking options and midfield during the summer as they spent around £87m.

If they were to spend any more money in January it would probably be on more defensive options, especially if they lose someone like centre-back Willy Boly.
