One player from every Premier League club who needs a big 2020, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United stars

As the end of 2019 approaches, we head into a new decade with plenty of players, managers and clubs hoping for a big 2020.

For many it will be important in keeping their jobs, earning new contracts and finally getting over injury ravaged 12 months.

In 2019 we saw players such as Moussa Sissoko and Caglar Soyuncu come in from the cold and prove themselves, at Tottenham and Leicester respectively.

Huge strides can be taken over a year and some stars need to improve more than others.

Here at talkSPORT.com, we have taken a look at one player from every Premier League club who needs a big year.

Arsenal – Kieran Tierney

The £25million defender’s 2019 has been ravaged with injury and he will start 2020 recovering from a dislocated shoulder.

Tierney will need a big year to try and kick on with the Gunners under a new manager as he attempts to be a big part of their future.

Aston Villa – Jack Grealish

Villa will need to rely on the Englishman to stay in the Premier League and he needs to put in some big performances.

He could also force his way into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020 so the 24-year-old has plenty to play for next year.

Bournemouth – Dominic Solanke

The striker was hailed as one of the brightest young prospects in English football when he was coming through the ranks at Chelsea.

He won the Golden Ball when England won the 2017 Under-20 World Cup but he has failed to make the step up in senior football.

Bournemouth paid around £19m for him from Liverpool and he needs to kick on over the next 12 months.

Brighton – Alireza Jahanbakhsh

The Iran international signed for Brighton in 2018 for a club record fee of around £17m.

The winger has made 25 appearances in all competitions and, up until the weekend had failed to score a since.

This season he could yet make a big impact just when it looked like his time to make an impact was running out.

Burnley – Jay Rodriguez

The Clarets re-signed Rodriguez in a deal worth £10m in July but this season he has scored just three times.

The striker has been hit and miss in his time in the Premier League and has only once reached double figures.

At 30 this is probably his last chance at a top flight club to establish himself as a quality forward.

Chelsea – Reece James

The right-back is expected to be the long-term replacement for Cesar Azpilicueta.

James needs to take his chances in 2020 and show that he is ready to be a first team regular at Stamford Bridge.

Crystal Palace – Christian Benteke

The 29-year-old striker has been poor over the last two-and-a-half seasons scoring just four goals in 64 appearances.

He still has a contract that runs through to the end of the 2020/21 season and if he wants to get another extension then he needs to rediscover his form from earlier in his career at Aston Villa.

Everton – Dominic Calvert-Lewin

There are still some question marks as to whether the young forward can be a consistent goalscorer in the top flight.

This will be his third full season at the club and he looks set to break double figures in the Premier League for the first time.

If he does not have a big 2020 then Everton’s new manager will be looking to sign reinforcements.

Leicester – Kelechi Iheanacho

The striker has now played 55 Premier League games for Leicester but has scored just seven goals.

There is no chance of him displacing Jamie Vardy any time soon but the Foxes may start to lose patience with the 23-year-old if he does not continue his recent run of form.

Liverpool – Joe Gomez

Being a first-team regular at one of the best clubs in Europe is no easy task but Gomez has the talent to establish himself alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Joel Matip is still ahead of the young England international at Liverpool and he needs to kick on in 2020 especially with the European Championship around the corner.

Manchester City – Phil Foden

Everyone is waiting for when the wonderkid will become a regular in the Man City team. He is the one player who Pep Guardiola said he would never sell and is widely regarded as one of the brightest players in the future of English football.

Many are hoping that 2020 will be Foden’s year to shine and finally announce himself on the biggest stage.

Manchester United – Anthony Martial

The Frenchman needs to step up in 2020 and prove he can be a consistent striker who can score 20 or more goals a season.

His best return in the Premier League was 11 in his first season so could find himself out of the team unless that changes.

Erling Haaland won’t be joining the Red Devils any time soon but his position may still be under threat.

Newcastle – Miguel Almiron

Newcastle splashed out £21m on the forward from Atlanta in January 2019 and he has only just scored his first goal for the club.

The 25-year-old will need to prove himself in 2020 and show he was not a waste of money.

Norwich – Patrick Roberts

Man City paid £12m for Roberts in 2015 but has only made three appearances for them since signing.

The winger had three loan spells at Celtic, one at Girona and is currently at Norwich.

The 22-year-old is probably running out of chances to prove he can be as top Premier League player and needs a big year to either stay at City or get a permanent move elsewhere.

Sheffield United – Oli McBurnie

It has been a slow start at Bramall Lane for Blades record signing McBurnie.

The 23-year-old has scored just three times in 18 appearances since his £17.5m move from Swansea.

All involved will hope his strike against Brighton was the start of something special

Southampton – Che Adams

Adams joined the Saints for £15m in the summer and is yet to score for the club in 15 appearances.

It is not easy to find your feet in a struggling side but Southampton are crying out for someone to score goals for them.

Adams could play a big role in helping to keep them in the Premier League next year.

Tottenham – Kyle Walker-Peters

Right-back has been somewhat of a problem position for Spurs this season without Kieran Trippier.

Mauricio Pochettino tried a number of players, and formations, to try and solve it but to no avail and against Chelsea and Norwich Serge Aurier again proved he’s not up to the task.

The 22-year-old needs to have a big year before Jose Mourinho starts to shop around for a new full-back.

Watford – Troy Deeney

If ever there was a moment when the Hornets needed their captain to step up, it is now – and he is.

Deeney has scored in victories over Manchester United and Aston Villa. He could play a vital role in the second half of the season as they attempt to avoid relegation.

West Ham – Jack Wilshere

The midfielder’s career has been blighted by injury and has so far managed just 11 appearances for the Hammers in the 18 months at the club.

The 27-year-old needs to stay healthy for a full season otherwise it is difficult seeing another Premier League team picking him up at the end of his contract in 2021.

Wolves – Patrick Cutrone

The Midlands side invested £16.2m in the striker in the summer but he has so far managed just three goals in 23 appearances.

Cutrone is still only 21 but needs to have a big season at Molineux and start scoring more goals.
