Jose Mourinho says Christian Eriksen can leave Tottenham with pride amid January transfer links to Inter Milan

Jose Mourinho has said Christian Eriksen can leave Tottenham with his head held high, amid reports of a January transfer to Internazionale.

The boss has backed Danish ace Eriksen after he received boos from supporters in recent games, and insisted the playmaker has ‘given everything’ for Spurs.

The Denmark international’s career in north London is set to come to an end when his contract expires in the summer, although he could depart this month if a club are willing to cough up some cash.

And reports in Italy suggest Eriksen has agreed a deal to join Inter in the January transfer window, rather than wait until the end of the season.

That could mean his outing in the FA Cup replay win over Middlesbrough may have been his farewell appearance in a Tottenham shirt.

Despite almost seven years of brilliant service to Spurs, his relationship with the fans has recently turned sour.

He was booed off against Liverpool last weekend and again was jeered before the Boro replay kicked-off, where goals from Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela set up a fourth-round meeting with Southampton.

But Mourinho says that Eriksen should be proud of his stint in north London.

“He played very well. Played very well, very professional which is what I expect from him,” Mourinho said of Eriksen’s display against Boro.

“If his decision is to leave I think he has to leave with his head up, if he gives everything which is what he tries to do for the team.

“Fans, it’s always to respect, we have to respect but I think the boy did it for us today.”
