Jurgen Klopp has revealed Liverpool were able to sign Joel Matip and Andy Robertson with relative ease due to the lack of competition from other clubs.

The Reds boss sat down with former Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger for a frank discussion about invincibility with the men from Merseyside yet to lose a Premier League game this season.

After 21 games the defending European and world champions are yet to taste defeat in the league, with Wenger’s 2003/04 squad the only other side to complete a whole Premier League campaign unscathed.

The German admitted the club had to sign players for their potential rather than attracting genuine world class stars, with Robertson and Matip prime examples of this.

“[Andy] Robertson was sensational attacking but nobody wanted him because defending was not good,” Klopp claimed, sitting down with Wenger for beIN Sports.

“Now you see him now, you can learn defending.

“Joel Matip on a free transfer, nobody wanted him really. But you need to make good decisions because the other teams don’t sleep.”

Scotland international Robertson arrived from Hull in the summer of 2017 after they were relegated to the Championship, with Matip a free signing from Schalke in 2016 before Klopp was hired by Liverpool.

Both men have proved integral to Liverpool’s success in recent years under Klopp, starting the Champions League final win in Madrid last June.

The champions-elect take on Manchester United at Anfield this Sunday, knowing victory could leave them 14 points clear of Manchester City and with a game in hand against West Ham still to come.
