Chelsea fail to strengthen top four bid as Blues suffer sickening stoppage-time defeat at Newcastle

Chelsea gave the likes of Manchester United an opportunity to close the gap on them in fourth as they suffering a gut-wrenching 1-0 defeat at Newcastle.

Isaac Hayden’s stoppage-time header gave Steve Bruce’s men the unlikely win in a game that lacked clear-cut chances and quality in general.

The Blues will now be hoping for nearest rivals for the coveted Champions League spots, Man United, to drop points when they face Liverpool on Sunday.

The game made a tepid start with the most notable moment Jetro Willems going off injured, adding to Newcastle’s growing list of casualties.

But in a weird sense this setback sprung them into life and they nearly went in front when striker Joelinton headed the ball against the crossbar just after the 20 minute mark.

Chelsea then had a chance of their own when Reece James’ excellent through ball set N’Golo Kante away.

The midfielder had options to pass across goal but opted to go for glory and Martin Dubravka was equal to his effort.

Things didn’t improve that much after the break but Newcastle became increasingly content for a point as it wore on, while Frank Lampard’s men hunted for the three points.

Striker Tammy Abraham had a couple of opportunities. The first saw the ball break to him inside the box and Abraham did well to round the Magpies keeper but couldn’t sort his feet out in time and shot wide with his left peg from a very tight angle.

And on 79 minutes, the striker was unable to hook the ball over the onrushing Dubravka after Cesar Azpilicueta headed Jorginho’s searching pass across goal.

It was all Chelsea after that and they very nearly took the lead when substitute Emerson Palmieri fizzed a long range effort wide of the post which took a slight deflection off Federico Fernandez.

And just when it looked like the game was going to drift off into a goalless draw, Hayden got on the end of a ball from a left to send the Toon Army wild and leaving the Chelsea players and staff thoroughly dejected.
