Tottenham Hotspur new stadium update: UEFA ready to let Spurs host Champions League quarter-final at ground

Tottenham could play a potential Champions League quarter-final at their new stadium with UEFA reportedly willing to let them use the still unfinished ground later this season.

Spurs have one foot in the quarter-finals having secured an excellent 3-0 defeat of Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening, in a match played at the north Londoners’ temporary home of Wembley.

Barring a remarkable comeback by the Germans in the second leg, which takes place at the Westfalenstadion next month, Tottenham will be in their first Champions League quarter-final in eight years – they lost to Real Madrid in 2011 – and their first under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

And, according to the Standard, UEFA are open to letting the last eight match take place at Tottenham’s new stadium, should it be opened before the quarter-finals are played in April.

Tottenham remain in talks with European football’s governing body over usage of the ground, with delays continually preventing the stadium from opening; it was due to first host a Premier League match last September.

The Premier League have still not been made aware of when Tottenham will move into their new home, with the north Londoners confirming their sixth from final home match – against Arsenal on March 2 – will take place at Wembley.

It is believed the League would prefer Spurs to play at least five matches at their new stadium, though fixtures against Crystal Palace and Brighton – their next two opponents after Arsenal – may have to be rescheduled due to their FA Cup commitments.

Heung-Min Son, Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente scored on Wednesday night as Spurs downed Dortmund, making it four wins in a row in all competitions for Pochettino’s side.
