Michael Cohen Subpoenaed By Senate Panel, Plans To Comply
WASHINGTON, DC — Michael Cohen has been served with a subpoena by the Senate Intelligence Committee, his lawyer told Patch in a statement Thursday. And President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer, who is due to report to prison in early March, plans to comply.
CNN reported, citing an anonymous source close to Cohen, that the Senate testimony is planned for mid-February. Cohen’s lawyer Lanny Davis told MSNBC he will “honor” the subpoena.
“Of course he will honor the subpoena,” Davis responded when asked whether Cohen would testify. “But what he will do as a result of the subpoena is a legal issue that would come down to reasonable discussions.”
The news comes just one day after Cohen indefinitely postponed his congressional testimony, which was slated for next month before the House Oversight Committee. His decision to back out of the House testimony was reportedly made due to ongoing threats against him and his family, Cohen’s lawyer Lanny Davis said in a statement. He specifically cited Trump’s verbal attacks.
“Due to ongoing threats against his family from President Trump and Mr. Giuliani, as recently as this weekend, as well as Mr. Cohen’s continued cooperation with ongoing investigations, by advice of counsel, Mr. Cohen’s appearance will be postponed to a later date,” said Davis.
But Davis left the door open that Cohen would still testify in the future, and even said his client”looks forward” to it. The testimony just has to come at the appropriate time, he said.
“This is a time where Mr. Cohen had to put his family and their safety first,” said Davis.
Cohen was sentenced to three years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to tax and campaign finance violations, as well as lying to Congressional lawmakers. He is scheduled to report to prison March 6.
The planned remarks in the House were to come after Democrats gained a majority in the chamber. The hearing was likely going to reveal details about major happenings involving Trump’s personal life and business dealings, according to The Associated Press. Among them: hush-money payments to women and a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.
