NXT Name Change, Cruiserweights at MITB, Special Smackdown Plans

Although it was heartbreaking to learn that Nixon Newell has to miss out on the Mae Young Classic tournament on the WWE Network last year due to an injury, Newell has been competing for the NXT brand lately and she seems intent on finally making a name for herself in WWE. A major step relating to her future in the company has just been taken. WWE recently launched a brand new website for the Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, and the official roster page featuring the PC recruits shows that Newell’s ring name has officially been changed to Tegan Nox. Perhaps Nox will be able to compete in the second Mae Young Classic tournament later on this year.

The cruiserweight division in WWE has been completely reshuffled in recent months due to creative control of the show being handed over to Triple H. The cruiserweights no longer compete on the Raw brand, but there have been Cruiserweight Championship defenses on WWE pay-per-views ever since WrestleMania. There is currently no cruiserweight matches of any sort confirmed for the Money in the Bank pay-per-view on June 17th, and according to Cageside Seats, that is not expected to change. It appears that the cruiserweights will be competing exclusively on 205 Live every Tuesday night on the WWE Network for the time being.

WWE aired a very special edition of Monday Night Raw earlier this year in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the show. Smackdown is expected to become a much bigger show once it officially debuts on the Fox network next year, but WWE may be planning another huge Smackdown event before then. According to a report from PWInsider, WWE is working on a major Smackdown episode at the moment. The show will likely be made to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the show. The first episode of Smackdown debuted on April 29th, 1999, so it seems incredibly likely that this edition of the show will either be airing on April 23rd or April 30th of 2019.
