North Dakota State 35, Cal Poly 6

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The North Dakota State wrestling team won eight of a possible 10 matches and recorded bonus points in five of those wins to roll to a 35-6 dual victory at Cal Poly on Saturday, Jan. 4.

NDSU (3-3) received first-period pins from 141-pounder Clay Cathey and 197-pounder Tyler Lehmann, as well as technical falls by Steven Monk and Hayden Zillmer at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively.

Bison redshirt freshman Hunter Weber started the dual with a 3-0 decision over Britain Longmire at 125 pounds. After No. 20-ranked Devon Lotito earned a 6-1 decision over NDSU’s Justin LaValle at 133, Cathey pinned Cal Poly’s Jacob Leon in 2:34 to give the Bison a 9-3 lead they would not relinquish.

Tyler Diamond and Nick Olejnik posted decisions for NDSU at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. The No. 4-ranked Monk registered a 16-1 technical fall at 165 pounds, and Zillmer followed up with a 21-6 technical fall of his own to stretch the Bison lead to 25-3.

At 184 pounds, NDSU’s Kurtis Julson won a 16-2 major decision over Cal Poly’s Kent Beecham. Lehmann’s pin at 197 pounds took just 1:52 and came in his first dual meet appearance for the Bison.

NDSU will travel to CSU Bakersfield for a dual on Monday, Jan. 6.

285 – Spencer Empey (Cal Poly) won by decision over John Gusewelle (NDSU), 9-7.
