SJU’s Hagen and Willaert Claim Second at Competitive North Country Open

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s placed six wrestlers in the top six of the 215-participant North Country Open on Saturday, Feb. 2, in Collegeville.

Senior Mitch Hagen (Sunburg, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg), the fourth-ranked wrestler in Division III, went 3-0 with a pair of first-period pins and a decision in the semifinals at 184 pounds before falling to Minnesota’s Brett Pfarr 8-3 in the championship match. Pfarr is the younger brother of two-time SJU All-American Matt Pfarr ’12. Hagen is now 11-5 on the year.

Freshman Josh Willaert (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) followed a similar path to the finals at 174 pounds with a pair of pins and two more decisions before falling to Dickinson State’s (N.D.) Cameron Schrempp, 4-2 in overtime. Willaert is now 16-3 this season.

Junior Nick Schuler (Roseville, Minn./Totino-Grace) improved to 13-1 at 165 pounds with three wins before leaving the tournament in sixth place. Freshman Simon Liedtke (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) finished fifth at 184 pounds with a 3-2 record.

Senior Charlie Kirscht (Garfield, Minn./Alexandria) went 3-1 at 141 before injury defaulting his final two matches to take sixth and junior Alex Peck (Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s) went 3-2 before injury defaulting in the fifth-place match.

The Johnnies travel to compete at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Open next Saturday, Feb. 9. The meet is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Eau Claire, Wis.
