Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid: Thibaut Courtois’ plaque defaced with rats, beer cans and tin of shortbread ahead of Madrid derby
Thibuat Courtois will be expecting a frosty reception from Atletico Madrid fans when he visits for the first time as a Real Madrid player.
Fans showed their anger towards their former player by defacing a plaque with Courtois’ name on it outside the Wanda Metropolitano.
Atletico supporters covered it with fake rats, beer cans and were seen spitting on it.
Even more bizarrely a box of Marks and Spencer’s shortbread was placed on the plaque.
Courtois was expecting plenty of abuse from the home supporters for the Madrid derby in La Liga on Saturday.
Speaking ahead of the game, he said: “I don’t mind. If that makes them happy, then good for them.
“If they want to throw things at my head, it won’t affect me. It’s more motivation.”
The goalkeeper spent three seasons on loan with Atletico helping them to win La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Europa League and finish runners-up in the Champions League.
Courtois returned to Chelsea for four seasons before he was signed by Real Madrid in the summer.
