Australia: Wallabies assistant coach Scott Wisemantel resigns

The Wallabies have suffered a setback with the news that they have lost the services of assistant coach Scott Wisemantel, who has resigned from his position with immediate effect.

Wisemantel has plenty of experience as a professional attack coach after serving in the role for 20 years at four World Cups with Australia, Samoa, Japan and England, and he was part of the Red Rose’s backroom staff when they reached the final of the global showpiece in Japan in 2019.

Wallabies head coach Dave Rennie is disappointed that Wisemantel has resigned but said he respects his decision.

“He’s hugely respected around the world, has a mountain of experience at international level and an incredible rapport with our players,” he told Rugby Australia’s (RA) official website.

“While we did all we could to try and keep Scott, we respect his decision and wish him, Gabs and the girls all the best.

“He’s been a massive part of this group for the past three years and we’ll miss him.”

Tough decision

Wisemantel admitted that it was difficult to step down but said he could not give all his commitment to his position.

“While this has been a very difficult decision, it’s one that’s best for me and my family at this point in time,” he said.

“The World Cup is the pinnacle of our sport and requires 100% commitment, and that’s something I’m unfortunately unable to give at the moment.

“I’ve loved being with this team under Dave and wish them all the best for their season and in the World Cup later this year.”

RA will now begin a process to find Wisemantel’s replacement to fit into the Wallabies coaching structure and will communicate any additions in due course.
