Axel Witsel: “We didn’t give PSG much of a chance.”
Speaking to RMC Sport, Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel reacted to his side’s 1st leg victory over PSG in the Champions’ League Round of 16 tonight.
“This was nearly perfect (as a performance). It is a shame that we conceded that goal with the slip that Dan (Zagadou) made. In the end, we had a super match, by being super well organised. Without the ball, we were really very good, aggressive in the good sense of the word on Neymar and Mbappé, because they are players who can make the difference. We needed to not give them too much space and we need to play with the ball and with the… you know what (smiles). That is truly what we did, we played super well, we went on counter attacks on multiple occasions. In the match’s totality, we were much more dangerous than them, we did not give them much of a chance and it was nearly perfect.”
On whether they were surprised to see PSG line-up with just 2 midfielders:

We were asking ourselves before the match if Marquinhos was going to play as a #6 or if he was going to be a third central defender and in the end it was the latter. That did not really change anything in the match, we knew the options that they could have and we did well. We are all very happy, even though it is a victory with a 2nd leg attached, we are going to enjoy this tonight.
On Erling Braut Haaland:
He is a goalscorer, he is 19 and he is a big talent. He will become a future sensation, he has enormous room for progression and we hope to keep him for as long as possible with us because it is clear that he will become a great.
