Barcelona transfer news: How the LaLiga champions could look next year with Antoine Griezmann, Neymar and Matthijs De Ligt

As the final whistle sounded at Anfield on the night of May 7, a cacophony of noise broke out as the football world soaked up one of the most incredible nights.

Against all odds, Liverpool had clawed back a three goal deficit to win 4-0 and knock the mighty Barcelona out of the Champions League.

For the second time in as many seasons, the Blaugrana were outplayed and outfought away from home after Roma dumped them out of Europe in 2018.

As Lionel Messi trudged despondently off the pitch, an inquest began and the plans for next season began to be hatched.

Frenkie De Jong was already on his way from Ajax, with rumours circulating about the next arrival to Camp Nou.

Atletico Madrid talisman Antoine Griezmann is reportedly a target, with his release clause dropping to €120million (£108m) at the beginning of July.

De Jong’s Ajax teammate Matthijs De Ligt seemed destined to join Juventus, but the Italian giants are struggling to agree a fee and Barca are back in the frame.

The 19-year-old centre-back has the talent and temperament to start for the LaLiga champions, with Gerard Pique reaching the twilight of his career.

But perhaps the most shocking potential capture is that of Neymar.

In 2017, the Brazil international shocked the world after agreeing a world record €222m (£198m) move to Paris Saint-Germain to pursue his dreams of being recognised as the best player in the world.

But the move to the French capital has turned sour. Rumours of a humbling return to Barcelona have intensified and the 27-year-old has failed to report to pre-season training.

In order to escape his Parisian purgatory, there are even suggestions Neymar will sacrifice as much as HALF of his mammoth weekly wages to ensure he gets his return.

So with all this talent on display, how on earth will Barcelona be able to fit all of their best players onto the pitch?

Below, talkSPORT.com has assembled a potential starting XI for Barcelona next season, including the players they have already signed and some of the players linked with a move.

As mentioned above, 32-year-old Pique is nearing the end of his established career. Having a 19-year-old alongside him will not only help with the gruelling leg work, but allow the Spain international to mentor De Ligt in the same way Carles Puyol once helped him. Both prefer the right side but Pique may well shift to the left due to his experience.

Jordi Alba still loves to bomb on from left-back and the introduction of Frenkie De Jong to the Barca midfield will only further compliment the side.

De Jong typically operates as a pivot in midfield, but does so from the left-hand side. This in turn allows his full-back to maraud forward with little to no regard for his defensive duties.

But it is up front where Barca would be most impressive. With Griezmann and Neymar supplying Luis Suarez up front and Messi pulling strings in his usual free role from the right, the Champions League trophy could finally be returning to Barcelona.
