Blackpool fans rejoice as club put into receivership spelling end to Owen Oyston’s reign as owner
Blackpool fans have been quick to share their delight following the news that Owen Oyston’s reign as owner is to come to an end.
The club were put into receivership on Wednesday night, spelling the end of Oyston’s three-decade spell in charge of the Bloomfield Road club.
The 85-year-old, who took charge in 1988, still owes former director Valeri Belokon a reported £25million following an ‘unfair prejudice’ case in 2017.
Oyston is one of the most unpopular owners in English football and various incidents – including fans being sued and players, such as Charlie Adam, not being paid contract bonuses – have occurred during his tumultuous reign.
On the morning of the opening game of the 2014/15 season against Nottingham Forest, Blackpool had only nine players available after then manager Jose Riga lost 27 members of the squad that summer.
Fans have been protesting since the mid 1990s over the running of the club, and boycotts began to take place as the club continued their descent from the Premier League down to League Two.
There have been numerous pitch invasions and fans have even thrown tangerines and tennis balls on to the field.
Justice Marcus Smith appointed insolvency firm David Rubin and Partners to force through the club’s sale.
Blackpool are eighth in League One and now run the risk of a 12-point deduction after the club entered receivership.
Fans took to social media to express their joy at Oyston’s reign finally coming to an end…
