Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe suggests Callum Wilson should have gone down to try and win a penalty against Manchester City

Eddie Howe believes Callum Wilson was too honest and would have won a penalty thanks to VAR had he gone down in the Manchester City box.

The Bournemouth striker was clear through on goal in the second half and appeared to be pulled back by the trailing defender, just before he managed to get a shot off.

It mattered little in the end, with the reigning Premier League champions running out 3-1 winners on the south coast.

But Howe believes Wilson could have gone down to win the Cherries a penalty, with VAR potentially retrospectively awarding a spot kick.

“I think the defender has been very cute and very clever,” Howe told talkSPORT. “I think he has tugged Callum but Callum is so honest, he stayed up and tried to finish.

“I think if he had gone down, with the review of VAR, I think it would have been a stonewall penalty.

“So that’s a really tough one, it hasn’t gone our way, but we created those moments.

“It wasn’t just Callum’s chance; it was Adam Smith’s one in the first half. There were Dominic’s [Solanke] at the end so that’s the pleasing thing from today.

“Moments were there for us.”
