Dutch PM Mark Rutte: I’m not after a top job in Brussels
Even if Merkel and Macron put pressure on him the ‘answer is no.’
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte scotched rumors that he has eyes on a senior position in the EU, saying: “I will stay. I am not going to Brussels.”
Rutte, who has been in power for eight years, told Dutch radio on Friday that he wants to finish his job in the Netherlands — his current mandate runs until 2021.
He said he already has influence in Europe. “Because I have been here for so long time and know everyone, [I] can try to … work on solutions, such as with the migration crisis and the euro.”
Rutte has been tipped as a potential candidate for president of the European Council, a position that becomes open next year along with a host of other top EU jobs. Rutte is a member of the liberal political family, which said it will present a slate of candidates for top EU jobs in a move designed to push back against the Spitzenkandidat system for picking the European Commission president,

But Rutte said he wouldn’t swap The Hague for Brussels even if German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron put strong pressure on him. “I won’t do it,” Rutte said. “The answer is no.”
Rutte said he might have triggered the speculation by once saying that if he took a top European position, he would rather be president of the European Commission than of the Council. “I once answered the question and perhaps the misunderstanding arises from that,” he said.
