Early Reviews Not Looking Good for New Mark Wahlberg, Ronda Rousey Action-Thriller ‘Mile 22’

The new Wahlberg-driven action thriller Mile 22, starring UFC legend turned WWE Superstar Ronda Rousey, hits theaters this Friday, August 17th and the early reviews have started pouring in.

Currently the film is holding at just 25% on Rotten Tomatoes with 32 reviews counted so far, indicating a “rotten” production. The Metacritic score is fairing slightly better at 38/100, on a website where the numbers generally skew lower, based on 17 critics indicating “generally unfavorable reviews”.

Mile 22 stars Mark Wahlberg in the role of main character James Silva, a top-secret CIA agent tasked with bringing in an international asset when things go terribly, terribly wrong. The film also stars Ronda Rousey, The Walking Dead‘s Lauren Cohan, and Indonesian martial artist/choreographer Iko Uwais, known for his stunning fight sequences in The Raid and The Raid 2. Peter Birg (The Rundown, Deepwater Horizon) directed the project, based on a script by Lea Carpenter.

In his review for Rolling Stone, David Fear called the movie “a motormouthed mess that finds Wahlberg indulging in endless paranoid jags in between needlessly complicated plot loop-the-loops.” He also criticized several of the film’s major decisions, like not giving a UFC legend a single fight scene to sink her teeth into, and shipping up Uwais’ action sequences, “so that you can barely see the star inflict highly choreographed damage.”

The overbearing editing and action sequence cuts are a problem echoed by several notable critics, including Ben Kenigberg of The New York Times who claimed, “You fear more for the editors’ exhaustion than any onscreen injury.”

Mile 22 hits theaters this Friday, August 17th.
