England squad: Tyrone Mings earns debut call up with Mount and Maddison also included as Gareth Southgate keeps faith in Jesse Lingard

Gareth Southgate has called Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings up to the England squad for the first time following his impressive start to the season.

The centre-back, who joined Villa on a permanent basis earlier this year having starred while on loan at Dean Smith’s side in the Championship, will hope to debut when the Three Lions take on Bulgaria and Kosovo in their Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Midfielders James Maddison of Leicester and Mason Mount of Chelsea could also win their first caps throughout the international break having been brought into the senior set-up by Southgate, who has also made the decision to retain Jesse Lingard, the Manchester United forward, despite him failing to score or create a Premier League goal in the entirety of 2019.

Maddison and Mount were both called up throughout last season, though neither managed to debut and both were dropped down to the Under-21 squad for the European Championship this June.

There is also a recall to the squad for Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has not played for England since early 2018 and was forced to miss that summer’s World Cup through injury.

The most surprising omission from this month’s squad is Kyle Walker, the full-back, who misses out despite starting and completing all four of Manchester City’s matches this season. Furthermore, Tottenham’s Eric Dier and Dele Alli, Man City’s John Stones, Everton’s Fabian Delph, and Jack Butland, the Stoke goalkeeper, have all been omitted from Southgate’s squad despite being called-up for the Nations League finals earlier this summer.

On his decisions, Southgate said: “We only have eight matches before I name the squad for the European Championship.

“September’s squad is quite a difficult one with the limited number of games at club level.

“We learned some lessons from last September on the importance of physical fitness at this time of year, also some exciting players we wanted to look at and involve and we look forward to seeing them on the grass this week.”

Southgate went into further detail when explaining why Walker was left out the squad in favour of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who earns his first call up a couple of months after leaving Crystal Palace for Man United.

The boss added: “We tracked him [Wan-Bissaka] very closely last year and thought he had an outstanding season last season, but he should stay with the under-21 group.

“He’s adapted very well to a high profile move with the intensity and pressure and we are really looking at him and Trent (Alexander-Arndold).

“We also want to reintegrate Kieran Trippier into the group to know he’s still on our radar.

“It’s an area of the pitch where we have a lot of quality. Kyle started the season really well so I explained the situation to him. They all have different strengths.”

England have won their two Euro 2020 qualifying matches played so far, and will hope to retain their 100 per cent record against Bulgaria and Kosovo.

Both matches are at Wembley, with Bulgaria visiting on Saturday, September 9 and Kosovo taking on the Three Lions three days later.
