Frank Lampard’s bravery and willingness to change systems reminds me of Jose Mourinho at his ‘very best’, declares Pat Nevin

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is already showing resemblances to Jose Mourinho when he was at his ‘very best’, according to club legend Pat Nevin.

Lampard, who will manage his first Champions League game on Tuesday night as the Blues entertain Valencia, has not been afraid to mix up his systems this season.

And Nevin says the former Chelsea midfielder’s ‘fearless’ approach against Wolves was deservedly rewarded in the shape of an emphatic 5-2 victory.

Writing in his column for Chelsea’s official website, he said: “We have fearless Frank whose bravery is still amazing me.

“The change of system against Wolves was in retrospect a master stroke and one that would have surprised his opposite number, Nuno Espirito Santo.

“When you prepare for one system and a totally different one walks out, you must decide whether or not you should change.

“The home team rarely does in that situation and Wolves paid the price for not adapting.”

On the similarities between Lampard and Mourinho, he added: “It seems odd maybe but Frank’s willingness to change systems reminds me a bit of Jose Mourinho at his very best.

“He would always be on the lookout for the opposition weakness and when he spotted it he would move his players to make use of that frailty.

“This is one of the things that Frank has done very well and the player he has used most often to do it so far is Mason Mount.”
