McGuigan is set to be a major loss to Newcastle as he has been one of their main try scorers in recent seasons, with Jamie Blamire now set for more minutes.
The 29-year-old has put pen to paper on a long-term contract at the Cherry and Whites and will look to transfer that scoring form down to the West Country.
Try-scoring machine
McGuigan has played over 180 games in the Premiership, representing both Newcastle and Leicester Tigers, and made England’s training squad this June.
He has already scored seven times this campaign and the impressive hooker will provide cover for Jack Singleton, who recently sustained a serious leg injury.
Gloucester head coach George Skivington was understandably happy to bring McGuigan down from the north-east to Kingsholm and knows he is top quality.
“It’s a huge coup for the club that we’ve been able to secure someone of George’s talent,” he said as Gloucester prepare for Round Two of the Champions Cup.
“While he will provide extra cover in the absence of Jack, he’s with us for the long term, and I’m excited to see the role he can play in helping the club reach its ambitions this season and beyond.”
Next up for the Cherry and Whites in Europe is a trip to face Leinster, who dominated Racing 92 on the road in Round One, with Skivington braced for Friday.
“You are pretty much playing Ireland,” he said.
“They’ve gone to Racing and beat them 42-10, which is pretty unbelievable. I am intrigued to watch that game because I thought it would be a close match.
Leinster away next
“We are up against the favourites for the tournament at their place, but it is exciting as well.
“You can’t win the Premiership, the Champions Cup, if you don’t go and play these tough teams away.
“Sometimes, you have just got to win, and the boys found a way to win today,” Skivington continued.
“There is lots to review and lots that wasn’t perfect, but you have got to find a way to win. Their attitude and fighting spirit is never in doubt, and that came through for them in the end.
“We played some decent rugby in the first half, but it didn’t quite stick for us. It was a little bit sticky, and it felt like every time they got to the try line, they scored.”
