Hiker Rescues, Returns 7-Year-Old Girl's Stuffed Lion

BEND, OR — A little girl has been reunited with her favorite stuffed animal after losing it on the remote Broken Top Trail, thanks to a keen-eyed hiker and the help of personal connections. Holly Spaman, who had just moved to Bend, was hiking up the trail when she ran into 7-year-old Audrianna Flores and her family hiking down.

Audrianna told Spaman that her stuffed lion, Kitty, had been lost after falling from her mother’s pack unnoticed, the Associated Press reported. “She mentioned that she lost her animal on the trail, and I said I would keep an eye out for it,” Spaman told the Bend Bulletin.

Spaman, hiking with her partner, didn’t think she would find Kitty, but kept alert. A few miles later, she spotted the little lion.

“I so much wish I had asked for a cell number or email or something, but I didn’t seriously think we would find it,” Spaman told the Bulletin.

So, Spaman did what any modern American would do: she took to the Internet. She posed Kitty, Audrianna’s “go-everywhere” on a rock with a background of the peaks of Broken Top Mountain and snapped a photo and shared it online.

“Yesterday late afternoon I met a sweet child on Broken Top Trail to No Name Lake who asked me to keep an eye out for her stuffed animal,” Spaman said when she posted the photo, the Bulletin reported. “Guess what? I found it! If anyone knows this kiddo, please help us connect.”

She shared the message, then her friends shared the message, then her friends’ friends shared the message and the Bend Bulletin joined the effort.

Then, Erin Allen, Audrianna’s mother and a fellow resident of Bend, called Spaman.

“Holly delivered her to us today,” Allen said Saturday. “My daughter is so happy. I actually shed a few tears because of the kindness of Holly.”

“This has been truly amazing — all of the kind people out there in this world,” Allen said, the AP reports.
